University of Otago
Project Aims
This pilot
project consists of collaborative self-study research within the
development of critical literacy practices within primary schools.
Two teachers from each of two primary schools in the Dunedin area,
with the assistance of the researchers, will collaboratively investigate
the development and implementation of an enhanced critical literacy
focus within everyday guided reading practices in their classrooms.
Project Plan
The project
will consist of the following phases:
- Preparation
phase- engagement with the literature and development of the
critical literacy strategies
- Pre-implementation
phase- collection of pre-implementation data on student reading
comprehension, analysis of the pre-implementation videotaped
lesson and subsequent selection of critical literacy strategies
and planning of data collection
- Implementation
phase- videotaping of three guided reading lessons incorporating
critical literacy strategies, collaborative data analysis, student
focus group stimulated recall interviews
- Post-implementation
phase- collaborative analysis of data set, co-theorising of
results, examination of research process
- Dissemination
phase- co-authoring of a report for participating students and
their parent(s)/caregivers, conference papers and peer reviewed
journal articles.
Partnerships involved
- East Taieri
Primary School
- Port Chalmers
School
Expected Outcomes
The research
will:
- Enhance
the understandings and pedagogical practices of critical literacy
for the participating primary school teachers
- Document
the implementation of critical literacy strategies within regular,
on-going guided reading lessons in the participating teachers’
classrooms
- Involve
focus groups of students in stimulated recall interviews commenting
on a guided reading lesson using critical literacy strategies
- Produce
collaboratively theorised reports of the research process and
findings to share with audiences of both researchers and teachers
- Elaborate
on ways that the pilot can be expanded and enhanced in a future
research study.
