The
impact of technology use on the teaching and learning of mathematics
in the secondary classroom
December
2004 – December 2006
Mike Thomas, Mathematics Education Unit, University of Auckland
Project
Aims
The key aims
will be to:
- Analyse,
in the light of international theories of learning, the current
role of technology in mathematics learning in NCEA standards
- Identify,
support and extend best practice in the use of technology for
learning mathematics.
The objectives
of the research will be to:
- identify
the value of technology in the teaching and learning of some
aspects of mathematics in schools
- identify
how often and where technology is currently employed in the
learning of mathematics in schools
- analyse
in the light of current theories the nature of the qualitatively
different types of use of the technology in learning
- identify
any equity or cultural issues arising in the use of the technology
- examine
the role of teacher attitude to technology and recent professional
development on pedagogical practice with the technology
- investigate
the ways in which students integrate the technologies into their
learning and assessment practice, especially in terms of their
instrumentation of the tool, and the partnership they form with
it.
- identify
ways to measure improvements in student learning outcomes, such
as the standards’ results, and use these to measure outcomes
against technology use.
- promote
innovative and beneficial pedagogical practice using technology
by providing quality professional development for lead teachers,
who in turn can assist others
- disseminate
widely the research findings for the benefit of all teachers
and learners.

Expected Outcomes
- Interim
progress reports
- A final
report describing the use of technology in New Zealand schools
in Level 2 and 3 NCEA internal and external standards and teacher
attitudes to its use
- An improvement
in the quality of use of technology in the schools involved
in the project in the Level 2 and 3 NCEA internal and external
standards through the project’s professional development
strategy
- A better
understanding of any obstacles to, and issues associated with,
the use of technology in Level 2 and 3 NCEA internal and external
standards
- Two teacher
researchers with improved appreciation of using technology in
schools and newly acquired research skills
- An article
or articles in teacher journals describing the implications
of the research findings for teachers
- Scholarly
papers reporting the results found in the research.
