Conceptions of assessment and feedback in secondary school mathematics

January 2005 – December 2006
Dr Elizabeth Peterson and Earl Irving, University of Auckland.

Project Aims

  • To develop ways of identifying students’ and teachers’ conceptions of assessment and feedback.
  • To develop models which teachers can use to enhance the assessment and feedback process in secondary schools.
  • To develop research based evidence for effective assessment and feedback processes which will raise teaching and learning outcomes in Mathematics and English in four schools.
  • To disseminate the project findings in schools, communities, teacher education programmes, and research and policy communities.

Project Plan

This research partnership will extend the current understanding of how students’ and teachers’ conceptions of assessment and feedback, and the interplay among these beliefs, affect student performance. A collaborative team of teacher-researchers, teacher-educators/researchers, and university researchers will conduct a mixed methods comparative study in two key disciplines (Mathematics and English) in a range of schools. This research project will focus on identifying activities and tasks in assessment and feedback that can lead to enhanced teaching and learning outcomes.
