Understanding
learning communities in tertiary science and engineering education
2005 –
2006
Chris Eames and Mike Forret, Centre for Science and Technology
Education Research, The University of Waikato. Paper presented
at the New Zealand Association for Environmental Education annual
conference, Auckland, January 2006.
Project Aims
This project
aims at enhancing the quality of teaching and learning experiences
in tertiary science and engineering education. The study seeks
to develop a better understanding of how existing systems, processes
and practices influence both students’ and lecturers’
perceptions of, and attitudes towards, science and engineering,
and science and engineering education. The study addresses the
nature of tertiary learning communities and seeks to understand,
from the perspective of the participants, what it means to teach
and learn tertiary science and engineering.
Project
Plan
Over the two
years of the project, data will be collected regarding the learning
and teaching expectations and experiences of students and lecturers
in each of our four partner institutions. In the first year of
the project, a cohort of first year and a cohort of third year
students will be invited to respond to surveys and take part in
focus group interviews. These students will then be followed into
their successive years of study (i.e., second and fourth year).
Lecturers involved in teaching and administering these courses
will also be interviewed over the two year period.
