Project
aims
The
project will address obstacles to success to sought to address science achievement rates in applied-health undergraduate degree programmes at Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec), with particular attention to Mäori.
Phase One (2006) will explore "What science knowledge is necessary for new graduates, with particular attention to Maori, if they are to be competent midwives and nurses?
Phase Two (2007/2008) will involve developing piloting and evaluating an intervention in the science modules taught in Applied Health Programmes at a representative Tertiary Education Institution providing both Bachelors of Midwifery and Nursing. The intervention will be developed on the basis of findings from Phase One which will delineate the necessary science knowledge for new midwifery and nursing graduates, with particular attention to Maori.
Project
plan
The plan will involve:
- cementing roles of researchers and project management within project;
- interviewing clinical nurses and midwifery tutors;
- analizing interview notes and audio tapes;
- development of pilot intervention;
- delivering and evaluating the effectiveness of a pilot intervention.
Partnerships
involved
This project will be a collaboration between staff from four different areas at Wintec: a researcher from the Research Office, a professional education tutor from the School of Education, two science tutors from the School of Science and Primary Industries, and a nursing tutor from the School of Health. The team will also work with researchers from NZCER.
