Guidelines for Project Leaders
Investigating the impact of whole school approaches to education for sustainability on student learning

Project aim

  • To build on previous work in action competence by designing a valid and reliable framework for investigating the development of action competence in students, teachers and their schools.
  • To understand the practice of whole school approaches to EfS in NZ schools and the impact on the school community.
  • To understand and enhance the impact of a whole school approach to EfS on student learning.

  
Project plan

  1. Develop analytical frameworks for understanding whole school approaches to EfS and student action competence.
  2. Use these frameworks to construct research instruments for collecting research data in five schools as case studies.
  3. Look for change over two years.
  4. Analyse within and across cases for thematic outcomes.


Partnerships involved

  • Experienced EfS researchers partnered with National EfS school advisers who are in turn partnered with specified staff at each case study school
  • Overlying partnership between the whole team and the Enviroschool Foundation.
      

Expected outcomes

  • Development and validation of frameworks for analysing whole school approaches to EfS, and student action competence
  • Information regarding analysis of the development of student competency as indicated in the draft Curriculum statement
  • Building capacity for research within the EfS community and the schools.
