Learning
environments and student engagement with learning in tertiary
settings
Two year
project, 2008-2010
Associate
Professor Nick Zepke and Dr Linda Leach from the College of
Education, Massey University. They will work with partnerships from
one wananga, two universities, four polytechnics, one private
training establishment and a large community provider.
Project
aim(s)
- To identify and describe, in an agreed template format, literature relevant to
the project.
- To research the nature and extent of student engagement with learning in nine
provider case studies and a national case study across the tertiary sector using
data from a large quantitative survey of first time returning students, selected
interviews with such students and a survey of teachers.
- To investigate the influence of learning environments on student engagement with
learning in nine different institutional/organisational settings.

Literature survey conducted between
November 2007 and April 2008.

conducted in April/May 2008

Qualitative survey of teachers will
be conducted in Semester Two 2008

Student interviews will be conducted
in Semester One 2009,

The national analysis and reporting
of all student data will be completed by March 2010.
Partnerships
involved
The project
involves partnerships between nine providers working across the
tertiary landscape: two Universities, four Institutes of
Technology, one Wananga, one large community organization and
one private training provider (PTE).
Expected
outcomes
- Nine case study reports;
one for each of the partner institutions
- A national case study
report
- A variety of
presentations and journal articles.
